Last week we read a book, The Library Mouse.  In the story, a little mouse lives in the library and enjoys reading and watching the people who visit. When he creates and publishes his own books, people wonder,  “Who is the author?” The  mouse encourages the reader by showing them that everyone can be an author! Our artwork encourages viewers to look at themselves and see the author within. We made a beautiful new bulletin board:
We are also inspired to learn how to make our own mini-books with just a piece of paper. You might have noticed some of these little books have come home. It's pretty exciting to be an author!

English Language Arts: We have worked on our skills as an author, making books and thinking about text features. We have learned the meaning and applied the concepts of: table of contents, illustration, captions, and labels. These were used in a Turkey mini-book that went home on Thursday. Wild turkeys are really interesting animals!

Our current reading strategy is:
You can practice this at home! When students are reading with you, remind them to back up and read again if they don't understand something or if their attention wanders.

Finally, we are working in special groups for word work. Your student may be working with a different grade  teacher for 30 minutes each afternoon. Ask them what they are learning.

Math: We continue to add and subtract, and have practiced some mental math strategies ("make 10"). This week we also practiced making a simple quick picture to solve problems, and began looking at word problems.

Social Studies: We continue to learn about our world, examining our traditions and holidays. This week we focused on Thanksgiving and found out that Canadians have been observing this holiday for a very long time! Ask your student!

Science: We have been set a challenge! Ms Hatch likes freezies but they always make her hands to cold and they melt too fast! She would like us to invent a product to solve these problems. Next week we will run a "Dragon's Den" with a special guest for the students to pitch their ideas.

Wishing you and your family a restful and thankful Thanksgiving!
Ms Hatch
