Welcome Back!

Spring Break is Over so Now What?
Dear Families:

Here is a video for your child, welcoming them back after spring break: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BZ6e81ExhDzVey_jQIlTnkixM59MBFQb/view?usp=sharing

Thank you for your patience as we have worked through some necessary planning in preparation for resuming structured learning opportunities for your child. I understand there has been plenty of uncertainty about what learning is going to look like moving forward. I can assure you that we are going to work on key learning outcomes at-home within the parameters established by the province and CBE.

To help me understand your family’s access to technology, can you please go to the following survey and fill out the questionaire: https://forms.gle/hqDgKbwBVfckt6Ys7

Starting Wednesday April 2, 2020, you will receive from me a weekly learning plan. Each week’s plan will highlight what we are working on, will include various resources and will explain the activities or tasks I would like your child to work on.

I will primarily be communicating with you and your child via Google classroom and Google Meet, and if necessary, will replicate lessons into a paper format. Your student is already enrolled in Google Classroom. They can check their email for the link.

Students and/or parents can reach out to me for help or for clarification via e-mail, and later via Google Meet. I can be reached on either platform at lhatch@educbe.ca. If the questions come in during the weekday, I expect to be able to answer most questions that same day.
I recognize this is new for most of us and we will get through this together. I am here for your child and look forward to being in regular contact with your child and yourself.

Hello students and families!

At this time, we are waiting to hear from the system level what the next steps will be in regards to future programming for our students. Information will be communicated as soon as we know more from the Calgary Board of Education. This is a new situation for everyone and we want to assure you that the school will be communicating this information to our families as soon as we have a plan and procedures in place. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

In the meantime, the CBE has put together some resources until a long range plan is in place.  To access the resources, please click on the link https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/k-6.aspx.

Here's what we had been working on in class:

Important things your student knows: your student has learned how to use google apps, in particular gmail and slides. In slides, they can search for pictures and they learned how to take a photo using the in-browser camera. This should work on an ipad at home, or a laptop with a camera. Students have been told they are NOT to take pictures of themselves and put them online, even in google slides that are private. Please remind them of this. We have worked on being good digital citizens, but it's hard for students to know what is safe online. Please remind them: No pictures of ourselves, no names, no school name, no friend's names, no ages, no teams, no addresses.

Social Studies: We were continuing to travel across Canada and our next stop was Meteghan, Nova Scotia. We were beginning to learn about the culture of the Acadians, the natural resources in the area, geography and how people lived. In particular, we were connecting our recent work in science (boats and bouyancy) to the ways people used the ocean in a coastal community. We had begun learning about lighthouses, so a nice next step would be for students to learn about a lighthouse and tell you about it. Peggy's Point in Peggy's Cove is a great choice. Here's some ideas to get you going:

Student can research about a lighthouse and make a Google Slide to share with me. Other suggested activities is to make a lighthouse at home (model or blanket fort!) Again, students can use google slides to send me this. In place of themselves in a model, they can place a stuffed animal!

Science: We have been working on magnetism. If you have some fridge magnets, grab them and test out the question: "What is magnetic in my home?" What surprised you?
Bill Nye has a great video (and who doesn't love Bill Nye the Science Guy kid videos?) ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Viml1smEBks
Try magnetizing a needle or paper clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVI6fVc8kuM Is it stronger, or weaker than the original magnet? How long does the magnet work? An hour? A day? Overnight?
Watch some cool magnet experiments on Youtube. Pick one to try out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bebVg9xWW2k

Language Arts: Please read. Take turns reading. Read a shorter novel to read outloud your child. We had been working on the genre of Mysteries and were reading some Cam Jansen books at school.
Young Cam Jansen (easier reads): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEKR09a9V9k
If you have a Calgary Public Library card, you can download e-books on a tablet or computer.
We were also writing mysteries! Think about having a simple mystery at home. Act it out, with your child being the detective. Who ate the last cookie? Who left these dirty footprints? Where did the missing sock go?

Math: We were measuring using standard measurements and rulers. Cook with your student. Bake. While we don't formally learn fractions, you can explain how to measure things accurately and why it's important.

Please let your child know how much I miss them! We will be in touch after spring break to provide further updates and hopefully a plan soon to bridge learning time from school to home.

Missing you all! Mrs Hatch

Swimming letter correction

Good afternoon parents!

The Swim Forms have an error on the second page with the wrong time/dates. We are set to have swimming lessons April 27-30, May 4 from 9:56-11:24. Sorry for the confusion!

Friday March 6

Welcome back, Mrs Swan!

We are very excited to have Mrs Swan back until April during her final student teaching experience. She will be with us until April!

Important upcoming dates: We are in-line skating on Wednesday March 11, Thursday March 12 and Monday March 16. I recommend bring in helmets the day before so you don't forget. We'll hang on to them in the classroom until Monday. If students don't have a helmet, one is provided (and sprayed for cleanliness between children).

We had a chance to help Ms Scherschel with this week's announcements! Here we are, being very safe at the sidewalk:

This week in our learning:

Digital literacy: We have been busy! In addition to learning basic coding, we have started using email! Ask your student about his/her email address (hint: FirstnameLastinitialNumber@educbe.ca)
We helped Mrs Krahn's class get on the computers and make a Flappy Bird game, so we got a chance to be peer mentors and leaders. We have also learned some new skills in making Slides, adding text and importing pictures. All students have a google account that matches their student email. Ask and see if they can show you.

Science: We are exploring magnetism. We have learned about polarity and how magnets can make things in the world move.

Math: We are measurement masters! Ask your student about measuring distances!

Language Arts: we continue to work on stories, but we are reading and writing mysteries now! We are putting clues in our stories as our detectives try to solve a puzzle.

Social Studies: This week we finished researching our Arctic animal and building a model to join our zoo!

Art: We are finishing our trip to Iqaluit! We have learned about traditional ways of living, and created this amazing Northern Light over igloo art:

Wednesday February 12, 2019

Today we celebrated friendship and passed out Valentine's Day cards! Thank you to everyone. It was a fun (short!) class party at the end of the day with games and fun.

This week in our learning:

Math: This has been a week of subtraction! Lots of subtraction! Ask your student about it.

Language Arts: We have practiced our story writing and everyone has taken their basic ideas from outline, rough copy, self-edit, peer edit and teacher edit, to good copy. All the stories are compiled into a classroom story book that students can read during reading period. Our stories are really good!

Physical Education: We have had a residency with Ms Jessica, a hoop dancer, who taught us the basics of hoop dancing. It was amazing and we learned so much about Indigenous culture and ways of knowing.

Social Studies: We have learned more about what it was like in the past for people who lived in Iqaluit. We also made some amazing paintings of the colorful homes.

Thank you hand have an amazing extra long weekend!
