Welcome back!

Welcome back to school!

This week was a busy full week. Here's what we have been working on:

Language Literacy: We are diving in to story writing and features of a good story. Students are analysing story for structure and exciting beginnings. We have worked on using onomatopoeia words ("sound" words) like Pop! Crack! Pow pow! to add interest to our story beginnings. We were inspired by fireworks and I was excited to hear about some amazing adventures of students experiences of fireworks over the winter break.

We are also working on our spelling strategies in small groups. Ask your student what spelling sound they are working on: long a/short a; s/h/sh; long a spelled a-e, ai, ay; long a spelled ai/a-e and short a; j/h/ch.

Math: We are reviewing and extending our understanding of place value to 100 and beyond! Ask me about patterns in 100-charts.

Science: We have begun learning about boats and buoyancy. We did an experiment about floating and sinking, making predictions and testing our ideas.

Social Studies: This week we learned about a special cultural group in the prairies, the Ukrainians. In case you would like to look up some Ukrainian names, I used this website to find names that matched our English ones: http://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/ukrainian. Type in your own name and see if you can find a match. We also learned about Pysanky eggs and tried our some Ukrainian dance.  We are finished learning about Saskatoon and we are off to visit a new Canadian community next week!
Art: We tried out a crayon resist and learned some colouring techniques while drawing and colouring a sailboat scene. Not everyone has finished, so if your student is missing I will post next week after they have some more time:
