Our First Week!

Welcome to grade 2! We've had a busy week already. Here's what we've been up to:

Classroom Routines: we've been working on setting a positive classroom environment and understanding our role as learners in grade 2. We have set some classroom expectations and rules, and we're getting more comfortable with routines such as travelling through the school and following our schedule.

Math: This week we have worked on reviewing some of the number theory we learned in grade one. We are practicing subitizing (subitizing means "instantly seeing how many"), counting and the concepts of "more" and "less".

Social Studies: We have reviewed the idea of community, and have talked about favourite places in our community of Evanston. We really enjoyed seeing the "bird's eye view" of our school and streets when we used Google Earth. We have also reviewed the cardinal directions (north, south, east and west).

Literacy: We have done some reading and writing, and have set some expectations of what our job is when we Read to Self and Read with Someone. Ask me about this!

Science: We have not begun our first science unit, but as part of literacy we have talked about the stars and our solar system.

Art: We have learned about Vincent Van Gogh and have created a wall mural based on The Starry Night. I'll post some pictures in a blog entry early next week when we have finished our last few pieces.

Health: This week we worked on goal-setting for learning. We also read the book, The Good Egg about stress management and mindfulness.

Music: We began music this week! Monday is our first gym class.

Thank you for sharing your students with me. I'm enjoying getting to knew these amazing kids!
