Hello students and families!

At this time, we are waiting to hear from the system level what the next steps will be in regards to future programming for our students. Information will be communicated as soon as we know more from the Calgary Board of Education. This is a new situation for everyone and we want to assure you that the school will be communicating this information to our families as soon as we have a plan and procedures in place. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

In the meantime, the CBE has put together some resources until a long range plan is in place.  To access the resources, please click on the link https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/k-6.aspx.

Here's what we had been working on in class:

Important things your student knows: your student has learned how to use google apps, in particular gmail and slides. In slides, they can search for pictures and they learned how to take a photo using the in-browser camera. This should work on an ipad at home, or a laptop with a camera. Students have been told they are NOT to take pictures of themselves and put them online, even in google slides that are private. Please remind them of this. We have worked on being good digital citizens, but it's hard for students to know what is safe online. Please remind them: No pictures of ourselves, no names, no school name, no friend's names, no ages, no teams, no addresses.

Social Studies: We were continuing to travel across Canada and our next stop was Meteghan, Nova Scotia. We were beginning to learn about the culture of the Acadians, the natural resources in the area, geography and how people lived. In particular, we were connecting our recent work in science (boats and bouyancy) to the ways people used the ocean in a coastal community. We had begun learning about lighthouses, so a nice next step would be for students to learn about a lighthouse and tell you about it. Peggy's Point in Peggy's Cove is a great choice. Here's some ideas to get you going:

Student can research about a lighthouse and make a Google Slide to share with me. Other suggested activities is to make a lighthouse at home (model or blanket fort!) Again, students can use google slides to send me this. In place of themselves in a model, they can place a stuffed animal!

Science: We have been working on magnetism. If you have some fridge magnets, grab them and test out the question: "What is magnetic in my home?" What surprised you?
Bill Nye has a great video (and who doesn't love Bill Nye the Science Guy kid videos?) ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Viml1smEBks
Try magnetizing a needle or paper clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVI6fVc8kuM Is it stronger, or weaker than the original magnet? How long does the magnet work? An hour? A day? Overnight?
Watch some cool magnet experiments on Youtube. Pick one to try out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bebVg9xWW2k

Language Arts: Please read. Take turns reading. Read a shorter novel to read outloud your child. We had been working on the genre of Mysteries and were reading some Cam Jansen books at school.
Young Cam Jansen (easier reads): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEKR09a9V9k
If you have a Calgary Public Library card, you can download e-books on a tablet or computer.
We were also writing mysteries! Think about having a simple mystery at home. Act it out, with your child being the detective. Who ate the last cookie? Who left these dirty footprints? Where did the missing sock go?

Math: We were measuring using standard measurements and rulers. Cook with your student. Bake. While we don't formally learn fractions, you can explain how to measure things accurately and why it's important.

Please let your child know how much I miss them! We will be in touch after spring break to provide further updates and hopefully a plan soon to bridge learning time from school to home.

Missing you all! Mrs Hatch
